Dulaglutide

In plain English

Dulaglutide is a weekly GLP-1 medicine for type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood sugar, reduces appetite and lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is an FDA-approved medicine.

What it's used for

  • Type 2 diabetes in adults and children 10 and up (approved)
  • Lowering heart attack and stroke risk in type 2 diabetes (approved)
  • Modest weight loss

Benefits

In human studies, dulaglutide lowered HbA1c by about 1–2 points and reduced major cardiovascular events by 12% (REWIND trial). Weight loss is modest, about 3–5 kg at higher doses.

How it works

In simple terms: dulaglutide is GLP-1 attached to a large antibody fragment, so it lasts a full week.

It activates GLP-1 receptors, boosting insulin release when blood sugar is high, lowering glucagon, slowing stomach emptying and reducing appetite. Its large size keeps the kidneys from clearing it quickly.

Development history

  • 2014: FDA approves Trulicity (Eli Lilly) for type 2 diabetes.
  • 2020: Higher 3 mg and 4.5 mg doses approved.
