In plain English
Dulaglutide is a weekly GLP-1 medicine for type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood sugar, reduces appetite and lowers the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is an FDA-approved medicine.
What it's used for
- Type 2 diabetes in adults and children 10 and up (approved)
- Lowering heart attack and stroke risk in type 2 diabetes (approved)
- Modest weight loss
Benefits
In human studies, dulaglutide lowered HbA1c by about 1–2 points and reduced major cardiovascular events by 12% (REWIND trial). Weight loss is modest, about 3–5 kg at higher doses.
How it works
In simple terms: dulaglutide is GLP-1 attached to a large antibody fragment, so it lasts a full week.
It activates GLP-1 receptors, boosting insulin release when blood sugar is high, lowering glucagon, slowing stomach emptying and reducing appetite. Its large size keeps the kidneys from clearing it quickly.

Is dulaglutide used for weight loss?
It is approved for diabetes, not weight management. Weight loss happens but is smaller than with semaglutide or tirzepatide.
